May Chan

Certified Financial Planner

Originally from China, I grew up in small town Alberta and that wonderful experience I still treasure today. Upon completing school I moved to Edmonton, got married, and raised my family.  That sounds hum drum, but I assure you, it was not.  I enjoyed all aspects of my life.

I was always interested in finance, and spent a number of years working in accounting offices, so when a chance opportunity came to get into the insurance industry as an agent, I did the studies and obtained my Life Insurance and Accident & Sickness insurance licence.

I soon found that the people I served wanted more from me than just insurance products.  They trusted me and wanted to invest their money with me.  So when the mutual fund courses were made available to me I took them, becoming one of the first Manulife agents in Edmonton to become an investment funds advisor.  It didn't seem like long before my clients were asking for more than financial products.  They wanted financial advice to live their lives better, to send their children to school, and to retire comfortably.

I had learned a lot over the course of my life, but I knew I needed more formal training and I wanted to acquire more professional designations; therefore, I enrolled in the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) program, and 3 years later I proudly obtained my CFP designation.

I continue to pursue knowledge that will help me serve my clients better (as well as maintain my licensing requirements); however, I also like to spend time with my family and with my friends. Therefore, I have learned to separate the business and personal aspects of my life, and constantly work at maintaining a good balance in my life.

When I do get away from work, I love nothing better than getting together with friends to play Mah-jong (MJ).  I enjoy travelling; I love the fresh air, and sometimes being on a motorcycle (as a passenger)allows me to combine the two.  I also love to spend time with family, be it at home or if we go out to a restaurant together.  In fact, if we do anything together. I truly enjoy the interaction of family members when we get together.  And the bottom line: Nothing is more important or makes me more proud than my kids.
